Ben Hines

GEOLOGIST - ADVENTURER - NEW ZEALANDER

I have a diverse geological background and get involved in as many projects, applying as many methods as I possibly can. Here's a selection of some of my own work, and some of the projects that I've been involved with. My work includes: paleomag sampling, field mapping, stratigraphic and sedimentology studies, foraminiferal Mg/Ca paleothermometry, apatite and zircon fission track, and organic and inorganic geochemistry.

July 2016 - Wairarapa Sampling

One last field trip for my PhD, collecting bulk rock samples for fission track analysis. Spent the night at Castlepoint, enjoying some of the best that the East coast has to offer.

January 2016 - Marlborough Fission Track Sampling

Making the most of the Indian summer, James and myself set off for a week in Marlborough to complete fission track sampling across the major fault systems in Marlborough, to help piece together the structural development of the region.

April 2015 - Sampling in the Urewera's

It's not every day that you get the chance to be helicoptered into a remote section of New Zealand bush to use a rock saw to extract a near continuous sample suite across one of the Cretaceous Ocean Anoxic Events (OAE).

A large amount of sample was collected by cutting a continuous strip up the outcrop with the rocksaw, then blocks extracted using pick axes - two of which were bent due to the very hard nature of these sediments, before being extracted by helicopter. These samples will form the basis for a joint study between Otago Universsity and Oxford University.
