Ben Hines

GEOLOGIST - ADVENTURER - NEW ZEALANDER

A showcase of a few of the things that I've gotten up to...

October 2016 - USA Road Trip

After attending the Annual Geological Society of America Meeting in Denver, I rented a car and headed west from Denver, over the Rockies and into Utah for a couple of days in Arches National Park, before looping back through Colorado Springs. Managed to catch dawn and sunset at Arches, which was absolutely stunning - I'd recommend it to anyone thinking of going there!

August 2015 - Italian Travels

After attending the Urbino Sumnmer School for Paleoclimatology, I hit the road, meeting a few friends along the way and exploring Florence and Venice, before travelling on to explore Croatia and Switzerland.

August 2015 - Italian Alps

After finishing up in Venice, I meet up with a few mates and headed north into the Dolomites near Cantina D'Ampezzro for several days of climbing and exploring.

April 2015 - Kayaking Cook Strait

On the 1st of April, weather conditions were perfect for an attempt at the crossing. Cook Strait was dead flat, and we set out from Titahi Bay, in the North Island, to paddle the 90 km to Picton, in the South Island.

December 2013 - Snares Islands

On the Voyage back from the Cambell and Auckland Islands, we stopped by the Snares Islands to film some additional footage, and took to the Zodiacs to get amongst the Sea Lions and Snares Crested Penguins

November 2013 - Avalanche Peak

A flying visit through Christchurch ended up with a weekend spent up Arthur's Pass, and testing out my then new telephoto lens on some of the cocky kea around the region.

July 2013 - Mt Somers

Headed down south to Christchurch for a weekend and caught up with a group of mates to head inland and climb Mt Somers in the snow.

June 2013 - Mt Holdsworth

After an early and particularly heavy dump of snow, I shot over to the Wairarapa with my mate Daniel for a quick mission up to the tops to check it out.

January 2013 - Diving the Yung Pen

The first scuba dive I did following completion of my Open Water certification was a dive on the wreck of the fishing trawler, the Yung Pen, on the Wellington south coast.
